Rapper, charity fundraiser, multi-MOBO Award and Mercury Prize winner, MC and mum, Ms Dynamite is a busy lady. So much so that it takes me a couple of days of increasingly frantic calls to track her down ahead of her forthcoming headline gig at Area Nightclub in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
The words of her most recent single Neva Soft released last year ring true to me as I hang on the phone. ‘All the hype from the anticipation… Never know ‘bout the moves we’ve been making… Best things come to those who been waiting’.
I ask if the lyrics reference her long-awaited third album.
“I don’t want it to come off that I’m the boss, I’m not so egotistical,“ says Ms Dynamite. “Words couldn’t describe the support I get from people and I totally acknowledge that. However, in the same way I can’t put a time limit on when it will be finished as that’s all pressure, and creativity shouldn’t be rushed or pressured. It would be much worse to deliver something rushed at the last hurdle.“ So will she commit to a date for the next single even?
“It’s definitely getting very close but I’ve never committed to a date. The beauty of the position I choose to be in right now is that I don’t function as a record label on a schedule. I’m more in a space and a zone, and more open to how I feel, so I can get the best out of myself musically.“ The Archway-born artist, real name Niomi Arleen McLean-Daley has just turned 31. So what’s her biggest birthday wish?
“Erm, honestly without sounding cheesy or hippyish, I’m happy with everything the way it is. I’m not really a birthday person, it’s just another day and I’m not wishing for anything I don’t have already.“ The years away from the spotlight seem to have done her good. The one-time schoolgirl garage scene sensation, who shot to fame in 2002 with her debut album A Little Deeper, wanted to focus on raising her now eight-year-old son, Shavaar. She produced a second album Judgement Days in 2005. Then she took a break until 2009 when she appeared on Zinc’s Wile Out and Nextmen and Andy Cato’s The Lion’s Den. Last year she guested on Katy B’s huge club tune Lights On. The single and video for Neva Soft came out last summer.
Since then, she has been juggling motherhood with “writing, recording, working in a studio and performing.
“I always knew that one day I would get back into music. But I really closed the door and focused all my energy on being a mum. I made my choices because I didn’t want Shavaar to have pressure from the decisions I’ve made.“ What does he think of his mum’s music?
“He likes some of it but not other bits. He’s quite opinionated. He loves to sing, rap, play the piano and drums – he’s very musical.“ Children feature a lot in her work too. Niomi has raised funds for Childline, Stars Back Poverty and Children in Need, as well as this latest appointment at the Colosseum’s GOSH fundraiser.
“For me it’s basically feeling like an older sister to anyone and everybody. My role in life has been as a big sister and children are very dear to my heart. Obviously now as a mum, that’s just increased. Children are natural and amazing. The energy, genius, beauty and innocence that children hold needs to be protected.“ Now more dynamo than dynamite, Niomi is heading for a full- on summer of festivals and guest spots.
“It’s non-stop. I looked at my diary yesterday and I don’t think I have a Friday or Saturday night free until November, but I love performing – it’s one of my favourite aspects of what I do.“ And the new album?
“I like to keep my cards close to my chest,“ she laughs but admits she’s probably about two-thirds of the way through the album, which she plans to release on her own label Dynamic Ventures, this summer. Already three tracks are in the mix. The old-school reggae track No More, feelgood pop track Runnin’ and the semi-acoustic ballad Miss, which features a rap from Dynamite and vocal hook from Emeli Sandé.
“At the time I wrote Miss I was becoming a little bit more grown-up. And a little bit more aware that we all have hundreds of different sides to us as individuals. For me, part of being strong or being alright in life is about accepting all of the elements of yourself.“ Also in the line-up for the GOSH fundraiser are DJ Luck and MC Neat, John Kelly, Matt Jam Lamont, Dubba Johnny, Jake Abraham, Ed Case, Jamesie, DJ KGB and Spanish Fly, Champagne Bubblee, Matt Cadman and Sacha Dieu.
Area Nightclub, The Parade, Watford on Friday, May 4 at 8.30pm. Details: 0845 075 3993
Due to unforeseen circumstances the Colosseum is unable to host this event. Area Nightclub has very kindly agreed to host the event to ensure as much money as possible is raised for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

Saturday the 31st of May Sleek nightclub will be the venue for a live performance of internationally famous dj Pete Tong.
Peter “Pete” Tong (born July 30, 1960) is an English DJ who works for BBC Radio 1. He is the host of programmes such as Essential Mix and Essential Selection on the radio service, which can be heard through Internet radio streams, for his record label FFRR Records, and for his own performances at nightclubs and Music Festivals across the globe. Tong has also worked as a record producer and is known by the nickname of Lord of the Dance.
The phrase “It’s all gone Pete Tong”, where the name is used as rhyming slang for “wrong”, was reputedly first coined by Paul Oakenfold in late 1987 in an article about Acid House called ‘Bermondsey Goes Balearic’ for Terry Farley and Pete Heller’s ‘Boys Own’ Fanzine. It’s All Gone Pete Tong is also the title of a 2004 film which portrays a fictional DJ’s experiences as he realizes he is becoming deaf. Tong appears briefly in the film. It is also the name Tong has adopted for his club night at the nightclub Pacha in Ibiza.
In 2008 he was involved with the founding of the International music summit in Ibiza.

Cincinnati basketball is back in the news for the wrong reasons after the filing of a police report, which accuses several Bearcats of assaulting a nightclub bouncer.

May 15, 2012 – Brian McLucas, a bouncer at PLAY nightclub in Cincinnati, filed a police report Sunday claiming several members of the Cincinnati basketball team punched and kicked him when he tried to remove them from a VIP table on Saturday night.
McLucas, whose right eye is swollen shut, told Fox19 in Cincinnati that he asked the players to leave because they were drinking alcohol that didn’t belong to them.
“I said ‘you guys need to calm down,’” McLucas said. “And whenever I did that I looked to the right of me, and right as I looked to the right of me I seen the dude take three quick steps and punch me in the eye.”
UC athletic director Whit Babcock released a statement in response to the police report and television interview.
“Right now we are working to gather information and facts,” Babcock said. “While we certainly don’t want to rush to judgment and will allow for due process, we also want to strongly emphasize that we hold all of our student-athletes to a high standard for their behavior in the community. It is a privilege to play for and represent UC. It is not a right. We have made great strides in our program and this type situation is not what UC athletics is about or will be about. As of now, to my understanding, there are no charges filed, only accusations. We will next comment after we have had time to gather facts and our process moves along or is completed. We will invoke disciplinary action if any of our student-athletes acted in an inappropriate manner.”
This news comes just a little over five months after Cincinnati was involved in a horrendous on-court brawl with rival Xavier. The fight resulted in the suspensions of eight players, including four Bearcats. UC star Yancy Gates, who bloodied the eye of Musketeer Kenny Frease with a right cross, was dealt the harshest punishment of the bunch, a six-game suspension.

According to club’s workers, the police team made up of two corporals and two inspectors had escorted an unidentified rich man to the nightclub and were reportedly shooting sporadically in the air on the premises.
Some of the fun seekers ran for cover but unfortunately, bullets hit two of them who died instantly
It was learnt that two members of the police team, who were attached to the State Special Anti-Robbery Squad, had been arrested by the officer in charge of SARS, Mr. Abba Kyari, and handed over to the Apapa Police Division under whose jurisdiction the crime occurred.
When contacted on telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, said the two policemen were being interrogated and if found culpable, they would be charged to court for homicide.

This week I start school and I promised I wouldn’t go back without spending sometime with my girls so to Dazzling Lounge for a dazzling evening we went! I hooked up with my bestie Aaliyah, to met my girl Kara and Simone for what was great food and an interesting spontaneous night.
Located on the corner of King and John in downtown Toronto, we dined in an inviting atmosphere with two floors of stylish modern decor you could enjoy a good meal downstairs and before heading upstairs to dance the night away. There was one weirdo who tried unsuccessfully to ruin the ambiance, but we weren’t going to let anything spoil the evening.

Dinner was great, Aaliyah and I were in twinzy mode so we both ordered the Mango Salad, and split a plate of Philadelphia spring rolls. I’ve had sushi before but never with raw rawish fish, so I cheated and tried to cover the possibility of finding the smoked salmon revolting by opting for the cream cheese. I got a mouth full of goodness and no gag reflex to threaten my credibility so I think my encounter turned out pretty well!

My partner and I in a pose showdown.
Outfit: Top/Urban Behaviour, Tights + Tank/H&M, Shoes/Payless

Philadelphia cream rolls, it had avocado in it and lets just say I had a bad experience which this particular fruit, totally forgot and ate it anyways. Didn’t toss my cookies but I still have no plans of becoming BFFs with avocado anytime in the near future.

We didn’t end up paying the $10 bucks to get into the Lounge upstairs, it was looking kinda of dry. So we headed out on the street and managed to get on the guest list without paying a cent for Faces nightclub which I went to for my birthday back in February. I don’t know what was up that weekend but the club scene was extra dry. We called it an early evening after holding an unoccupied booth hostage and watching a few dance machines get disturbingly loose on the dance floor.
Regardless though the girls were great company and after my Purple Haze I was ready to call it a night. Despite the turn of events I still recommend both locations, Dazzling for the food and Faces for the dancing, I doubt either will disappoint.

The list of businesses operating in the early days at 3700 Oberlin Avenue just keeps growing…
After the 400 Bridge Club closed, but before Penny Morgan’s Place opened, yet another night club called that location home. The Country Gardens opened on December 19, 1935. The night club took out ads in both the Lorain and Elyria newspapers that day.
The ads, designed by two different newspaper art departments, have entirely different personalities. The Lorain Journal ad is pretty cut and dry (below). In this ad, the squab or chicken dinner seems to be the main feature.
On the other hand, the ad that ran in the Chronicle-Telegram (below) has some clip art (for some sex appeal) to stress the dining and dancing. Plus, there are two things that aren’t in the Journal ad: the address (which is always handy) and Confetti (which I am assume is the name of the band).
Newspaper ads continued to appear for Country Gardens well into 1936, with a 25 cent spaghetti and meatballs dinner featured in a November 21, 1936 ad.
Unfortunately it is difficult to determine exactly when Country Gardens closed and Penny Morgan opened her business there. The fact that the location was outside Lorain city limits in Black River Township makes it hard to research, as it was not included in the older city directories. Newspapers are probably the only source for information.
Nevertheless, it’s fascinating for me to sit in Mutt & Jeff’s every Saturday with the spouse and think about the history of the place and all that went on there down through the years – both legal and illegal.
